Pianist, percussionist, and composer, a complete and committed musician, Paul Wacrenier honed his skills through passionate study of the finest avant-garde jazz schools (Eric Dolphy, Steve Lacy, Andrew Hill, Mal Waldron, etc.). His projects and playing are rooted in this tradition and are frequently enriched by his encounters with leading contemporary artists (Tony Malaby, Gerald Cleaver, Dominique Pifarély, Myra Melford, Michael Formanek, Ralph Alessi, etc.).
His work, research, and reflections have led him in recent years to develop a percussive, rhythmic, and melodic approach to the piano, placing him in the lineage of pianists such as Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Mal Waldron, Dollar Brand, Andrew Hill, Cecyl Taylor, and Sun Ra—pianists to whom he pays tribute in his solo concerts. This acknowledged lineage guides his explorations as a composer and performer, where pulse, swing, harmony, dissonance, mystery, and sincerity are central to his concerns.
His search for accuracy and depth, in gesture and musical intent, has led him for several years to pursue multiple training courses in contemporary classical music (percussion), in traditional Breton music (bombarde) and African music (Kalimba, M’bira of the Shona tradition, Likembe of Congolese urban music and Guembri).
As leader of the group Healing Unit, he has developed a rich and original repertoire that blends written material and all forms of improvisation without dogma, for a group that expands to include an orchestra (Healing Orchestra). He collaborates extensively and has recently performed with John Betsch, John Dikeman, Pascal Charrier (Kami Octet), Yoram Rosilio, and Julien Soro.
